The forward was conspicuously overlooked by the Black Stars handlers but he has answered them with a wonderful performance as the Sky Blues snatched an away win on Saturday
Ghana striker Brandon Thomas-Asante put in a tireless shift up top as Coventry City secured a historic 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, recording their first-ever Premier League win following their return to the English top flight after a disappointing start to the campaign.
The Ghanaian striker, who played a major role en route to the Premiership qualification last season, proved to still be a valuable outlet for Frank Lampard’s side, battling tirelessly, winning duels and helping his team maintain pressure throughout the encounter.
The 27-year-old was snubbed on Friday morning when Ghana’s squad for the AFCON qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Gambia as well as the international friendly against Morocco was announced. Amid this shocking development, his work rate and physical presence were instrumental in Coventry’s memorable triumph, as the Sky Blues celebrated a landmark result in their Premier League return.
Thomas-Asante played the full throttle and had 43 touches of the ball, won nine out of 12 ground duels won as well as winning fouls. Also, he had four interceptions and recorded two successful dribbles out of three.
Despite all these numbers, Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz’s decision to ignore him has raised questions with reports suggesting a fall out between them during the World Cup.
Meanwhile, his countryman Caleb Yirenkyi also played 90 minutes but was hauled off in additional time as Lampard opted to put more men behind the ball to defend their precious lead.
