Ghana handed tricky test: Black Stars to face Columbia in a showdown

Scheduled to take place from 11 June to 19 July 2026, the competition will be the largest in FIFA history, featuring more teams, more matches, more host cities and more fans than ever before. For the first time, the World Cup will be jointly hosted by three countries, the United States, Canada and Mexico, while expanding from 32 to 48 participating nations.

The opening match will be played at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 11 June, while the final is scheduled for 19 July at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey.

For football supporters across Africa, the tournament presents another opportunity for the continent to make history, with ten African nations set to compete on the world’s biggest stage.

Africa’s Largest-Ever World Cup Presence

The expansion to 48 teams has significantly increased Africa’s representation, giving the continent its strongest-ever presence at a FIFA World Cup.

The ten African nations participating are:

* 🇩🇿 Algeria
* 🇨🇻 Cape Verde
* 🇨🇩 DR Congo
* 🇨🇮 Côte d’Ivoire
* 🇪🇬 Egypt
* 🇬🇭 Ghana
* 🇲🇦 Morocco
* 🇸🇳 Senegal
* 🇿🇦 South Africa
* 🇹🇳 Tunisia

African football continues to grow in strength and global influence. Morocco’s historic run to the semi-finals in Qatar 2022 demonstrated that African nations can compete with the world’s elite, while Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt and Ghana all possess the quality and ambition to challenge deep into the tournament.

Among the continent’s representatives, however, Ghana’s journey is expected to attract particular attention.

Ghana Drawn Into Exciting Group L

The Black Stars have been placed in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

It is a group packed with intrigue and quality. England arrive as one of the favourites to lift the trophy, Croatia remain one of the most experienced tournament sides in world football, while Panama will be determined to secure a place in the knockout stages.

For Ghana, the group presents both a significant challenge and a major opportunity. Matches against England and Croatia will test the Black Stars against some of the world’s finest players, while the clash with Panama could prove decisive in determining who progresses to the knockout rounds.

Ghanaian supporters will be hoping the Black Stars can draw inspiration from the country’s proud World Cup history and produce another memorable campaign on the global stage.

A New Format for a New Era

The 2026 tournament will introduce several major changes.

The 48 teams will be divided into 12 groups of four teams each. The top two teams from every group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will qualify for the knockout rounds.

The tournament will feature 104 matches, compared to the 64 played at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. FIFA has also introduced a new Round of 32, which will be played before the traditional Round of 16.

The expanded format is expected to create more drama, more opportunities for emerging nations and more football for supporters around the world.

The Biggest and Longest World Cup Ever

The 2026 edition will not only be the largest World Cup ever staged but also the longest.

The tournament will last 39 days, ten days longer than the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Matches will be played across 16 stadiums located in three countries:

* 11 stadiums in the United States
* 3 stadiums in Mexico
* 2 stadiums in Canada

Host cities include Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Toronto and Vancouver, as well as major American football hubs such as Los Angeles, New York/New Jersey, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas and Seattle.

Due to the vast geographical spread of venues, some teams could travel more than 3,000 miles between matches, making recovery, preparation and squad management more important than ever.

Around-the-Clock Football

Fans can expect almost non-stop action throughout the tournament.

With matches being played across multiple time zones stretching from the Pacific Coast to the Eastern United States, football will be available virtually around the clock for more than a month.

Weather conditions may also play a significant role. The North American summer is expected to bring high temperatures and humidity in several host cities, while some matches are scheduled for midday kick-offs, adding another layer of difficulty for players.

Who Are the Favourites?

While the expanded format creates opportunities for surprise packages, several traditional powerhouses enter the tournament as leading contenders.

According to Opta’s pre-tournament projections, the top favourites are:

Rank Nation Chance of Winning
1 Spain 🇪🇸 16.02%
2 France 🇫🇷 12.54%
3 England 🏴 11.36%
4 Argentina 🇦🇷 10.03%
5 Portugal 🇵🇹 6.78%
6 Brazil 🇧🇷 6.51%
7 Germany 🇩🇪 5.74%
8 Netherlands 🇳🇱 3.81%
9 Norway 🇳🇴 3.42%
10 Belgium 🇧🇪 2.29%

England’s status as one of the favourites adds further significance to Ghana’s Group L encounters, ensuring the Black Stars will face one of the tournament’s strongest contenders during the group stage.

Argentina Chasing History

Defending champions Argentina will be aiming to become the first nation since Brazil in 1958 and 1962 to successfully defend a World Cup title.

The South Americans lifted the trophy in Qatar in 2022 and will once again be among the teams expected to challenge for football’s ultimate prize.

Record-Breaking Attendance Expected

FIFA anticipates that more than five million supporters will attend matches during the tournament, making it the highest-attended World Cup in history.

The combination of expanded participation, world-class venues and the unique three-country hosting arrangement is expected to create an unforgettable festival of football.

Africa’s Dream Continues

As the world’s attention turns to North America, African football will once again seek to break new ground.

With ten nations represented, the continent enters the tournament with unprecedented strength and belief. Morocco’s historic achievements in 2022 proved that African teams can compete with the very best, and many will be hoping that 2026 becomes the year an African nation reaches the World Cup final for the first time.

For Ghana, the challenge begins in Group L against England, Croatia and Panama. It is a difficult path, but one that offers the opportunity to write another memorable chapter in the history of the Black Stars.

One thing is certain: from 11 June to 19 July 2026, the world will witness the biggest FIFA World Cup ever staged.

This version is structured like a professional newspaper or sports magazine feature and gives Ghana prominent coverage while placing its World Cup journey within the wider African story.
