Why Bibiani Gold Stars hold the advantage in the Ghana Premier League title race over Medeama

Can Gold Stars snatch the league from Medeama?

The Ghana Premier League title race has taken another dramatic twist and suddenly, Bibiani Gold Stars, despite losing 3-1 to Medeama few days ago, now appear to have the momentum, fixtures, and psychological edge over the Tarkwa-based club in the final stretch of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.

Just a few weeks ago, Medeama looked firmly in control at the summit and went on a winless streak which gave Gold Stars the chance to close in. However, when the two mining clubs met at the TnA Park in Tarkwa, Medeama ended as the victors and opened a five-point gap.

However, Wednesday’s shocking 2-1 defeat away to relegation-threatened Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City Park may have changed the entire dynamics of the race.

Gold Stars, meanwhile, did exactly what defending champions do by capitalising on their rivals’ crucial slip with a composed 2-0 victory over FC Samartex 1996 to cut the gap at the top to just two points.

Ghana Premier League table with three games to go

With three matches remaining, Medeama sit on 56 points while Gold Stars are breathing heavily behind them on 54. Yet, despite trailing two points, the Bibiani-based side arguably now look like favourites to lift the Premier League trophy for the second time running, becoming the first club from Western North region to achieve this feat.

The biggest reason is simple: fixtures. This weekend, Gold Stars are expected to receive three points via walkover against Hohoe United who unceremoniously opted out of the ongoing season after citing unfair treatment. This effectively hand Gold Stars, just like any other club that was slated to face Hohoe United three points in a silver platter. To Gold Stars, this is a crucial boost without kicking a ball.

Medeama, however, face a dangerous away assignment against relegation-battling Basake Holy Stars, a side fighting desperately for survival. At this stage of the season, such matches are rarely straightforward. The contrast becomes even more significant in the final two rounds. Gold Stars will face Dreams FC before ending the campaign at home against already relegated Techiman Eleven Wonders. This is a fixture many will expect them to win comfortably and Atta Kumi probably scoring many goals to also enhance his chances of winning the top scorer’s award over Bechem United legend Augustine Okrah.

Medeama’s run-in appears far more complicated. They host another survival-chasing side, Heart of Lions, before a potentially explosive final-day trip to Accra Sports Stadium against giants Hearts of Oak, who are also just six points behind and lurking around for opportunities to steal the trophy on the blind side of everyone.

Pressure and momentum could also play a role. Momentum in football can be powerful, and right now it seems to be swinging toward Gold Stars. While Medeama are beginning to wobble under pressure, Gold Stars are quietly building confidence at the perfect time. Their remaining schedule also offers more stability, especially with two favourable fixtures likely to yield maximum points.

Medeama, on the other hand, must navigate opponents battling for survival, teams often willing to fight for every ball, every point, and every moment.

And then comes Hearts of Oak away on the final day which appears to be one of the most emotionally charged fixtures any team can face in Ghana football. Even if Hearts are not competing for the title, the atmosphere in Accra alone could make the occasion extremely difficult for Medeama.

Can Gold Stars complete the comeback?

On paper, Gold Stars may need just one more big performance, likely against Dreams FC, to put themselves in pole position for a historic title triumph. Therefore, the pressure is now firmly on Medeama.

One more slip, and the championship could be heading to Bibiani again instead of Tarkwa.
