Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah has admitted that his team was outclassed in their defeat to Algeria at the Stade Prince Moulay El Hassan on Wednesday.

The Falcons of Jediane faced a baptism of fire in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener, losing 3-0 to the 2019 champions.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Kwesi Appiah was realistic about the gap between the two sides but refused to lose faith in his squad’s potential.

“We were up against a stronger side. This Algerian team has serious quality in every aspect,” Appiah admitted.

“We will do everything to bounce back in the next game.”

Appiah, who has been credited with reviving Sudan’s footballing fortunes amidst the country’s ongoing domestic challenges, emphasized that the tournament is a marathon, not a sprint.

Riyad Mahrez scored a brace with Ibrahim Maza adding another to see off 10-man Sudan.

The defeat leaves Sudan at the bottom of Group E, while Algeria moves to the top ahead of Burkina Faso on goal difference.
