AFCON 2021: History and records of host nation, Cameroon

Host nation, Cameroon is in Group A of the competition. The group contains Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and Cape Verde.

The tournament was originally scheduled to be played in June and July 2021 but the CAF announced on 15 January 2020 that due to unfavourable climatic conditions during this period, the tournament would take place from 9 January to 6 February 2021. On 30 June 2020, the CAF moved the tournament for the second time to January 2022 following the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic across the continent, whilst retaining the name 2021 Africa Cup of Nations for sponsorship purposes.

Cameroon is the second most successful nation in the cup’s history, winning the tournament five times (1984, 1988, 2000, 2002, 2017).

The Indomitable Lions has appeared 19 times at the tournament (first in 1970) the seventh edition of the Africa Cup of Nations held in Sudan.

Going in for their sixth title the Lions will be led by Head coach
Toni Conceição, Portuguese football manager and the captain Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

The team is destined with their all time top scorer
Samuel Eto’o (56 goals), the newly elected president of the Cameroon FA (FECAFOOT).

The Portuguese trainer retained 28 players from the 40 pre-selected earlier this month.

The hosts will face Burkina Faso in the opening match on 9th January 2022, at the Olembe stadium in the political capital Yaounde.

FORMATION

Coach Toni is likely to maintain his usual 4-3-3 and 3-4-1-2 game plan.

Prediction: Cameroon is likely to enter the last four of the competition.
