Match Report: Black Queens suffer defeat to Nigeria in AWCON qualifiers

Black Queens lost to Nigeria in the first leg of African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) at Moboladji Johnson Arena.

Uchenna Kanu’s first half brace put Super Falcons ahead on aggregate in the two legged tie for a slot in the 2022 AWCON tournament.

Ghana’s Elizabeth Owusua had the first effort of the match but her shot from distance went wide.

The away side had quite a good start looking dangerous on the attack but could not put themselves in front.

The home side broke the deadlock on 20th minutes with Kanu nodding in a free header.

Five minute later, Kanu grabbed a brace with another header this time connecting Toni Payne’s cross unmarked.

The home side held on to their lead to conclude thier opening minutes leading.

In the second half, Asisat Oshoala almost increased the lead but goalkeeper Fafali Dumehashi denied the Barcelona Fermene striker.

On the 56th minutes, Nina Norshie forced goalie Chiamaka Nnadozie to make a good save with an an ambitious effort.

Black Queens continue to chase an consolation and probably a comeback to stunt the home side but Nigeria remained resolute.

Oshoala missed a free header to make to 3-0 for the Super Falcons.

Ghana failed to find a way back in the game as the game as the Nigerians walked away with a two-goal cushion.

The second leg is scheduled for Sunday October 24 in Accra.
