The 2026 Commonwealth Games officially got underway in Glasgow with a dazzling opening ceremony that celebrated Scotland’s rich heritage, embraced modern pop culture, and delivered unforgettable spectacle — all crowned by a surprise royal entrance worthy of a Doctor Who episode.
In a surprise moment that had the Hydro crowd on its feet, King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived on stage inside the TARDIS.
Accompanied by cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy and actor Greg McHugh at the controls, with Sylvester McCoy — the Seventh Doctor — looking on, the iconic police box “traveled” across Scotland on a 50-metre curved LED screen. The journey featured stops at Loch Ness, The Kelpies, Edinburgh Castle and Balmoral before “materialising” in Glasgow.
Staying true to its promise to innovate, Glasgow 2026 flipped the script on tradition.
For the first time in Games history, athletes from both Olympic and Para sports entered the arena before the show began, parading along a giant living garden laid out on a Celtic Knot walkway.
The parade was soundtracked live by Skye-based electronic-trad band Valtos, joined by musicians from across the Commonwealth. By the time Team Scotland entered to a roaring ovation, the 74 teams’ decorated batons had turned the garden into a vibrant artwork celebrating diversity.
Actor Sam Heughan lured the Loch Ness Monster into the arena as pipers played Flower of Scotland. The ceremony then traced one transformative day in the city, with performances from Nathan Evans, Saint PHNX, French-Glaswegian singer GAÏA, and Eyve.
“We’ve created a love letter to Glasgow,” said Louisa Mahon, Glasgow 2026 Chief Marketing and Ceremonies Officer.
“From our amazing industrial heritage to the creative, people-fuelled city we are now.”
The Commonwealth Sport flag was raised and oaths taken by Paul Foster MBE, Robyn Love and Leslie Roy MBE.
Commonwealth Sport President Dr Donald Rukare said the Games’ true legacy would be inspiring the next generation: “Somewhere in this city, a young person will watch an athlete and quietly decide, ‘One day, that will be me.’”
The Scottish Baton completed its journey to an acoustic 500 Miles by Nina Nesbitt, passed from Hannah Miley MBE to Neil Fachie OBE, then Kieron Achara MBE, before reaching King Charles who officially declared the Games open.
“Over the next ten days, we will certainly thrive here in Glasgow,” the King said.
“I extend my warmest gratitude to the city of Glasgow, to all the athletes, to the organisers, volunteers and all who have made this event possible… It is now my great pleasure to declare the twenty-third Commonwealth Games open.”
Scotland is hosting the Commonwealth Games for the fourth time. Glasgow 2026 will feature 3,000 athletes competing in 10 sports and 6 Para sports across iconic venues in an eight-mile corridor.
George Black CBE, Chair of Glasgow 2026, praised the city for answering the call at short notice:
“When the future of these Games was uncertain, Glasgow didn’t ask, ‘Can we?’ We asked, ‘When do we get started?’ Because that’s what we do. We roll up our sleeves and, together, make extraordinary things happen.”
