As the Commonwealth Games atmosphere builds in Glasgow, Scotland, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has called for a fairer and more transparent sporting system across the Commonwealth, urging equal access to sporting opportunities and development programmes for all member states, particularly developing nations.
Speaking at the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting in Glasgow, where sports ministers and senior government officials gathered to discuss the role of sport in fostering healthier, more inclusive and equitable societies, Hon. Adams stressed the need for policies that are driven by research and credible evidence.
He noted that while enthusiasm for sport is shared across the Commonwealth, sustainable progress can only be achieved when governments use reliable data to shape decision-making. According to him, evidence-based policies can improve public health, strengthen communities, promote social inclusion and contribute significantly to national development through sport.
The Minister also reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to creating an inclusive, athlete-focused sporting environment that offers equal opportunities regardless of background. He explained that the country’s sports development strategy will continue to prioritise transparency, inclusivity and data-informed planning to ensure lasting growth and success.
Hon. Adams further highlighted the importance of stronger collaboration among Commonwealth nations, describing partnerships as essential to unlocking sport’s potential as a tool for development, peace and social transformation.
The Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting remains a key platform for member countries to exchange ideas, strengthen cooperation and develop policies that harness the power of sport to drive positive change across the Commonwealth.
