Veteran Ghanaian coach, Bashir Hayford has lamented over Ghana’s abysmal performance at the African Nations Championship in Algeria.

The Black Galaxies were eliminated from the tournament following a 2-0 defeat to Niger in the quarter-final stage on Saturday.

Coach Bashir Hayford, who handled Asante Kotoko between 2007 and 2008 expressed worries and claimed that the performance of the team shows the quality and the crop of players in Ghana while speaking in an interview with Accra-based Original FM.

“We always complain about inviting the local players to our main national team and they are the players we have in the absence of our foreign players.

“By God’s grace they were given the opportunity to play at the CHAN tournament and also justify themselves but Ghanaians are not happy about what happened.

“As a coach, I was worried about their style of play. The performance was like they were playing together for the first time meanwhile, they trained and prepared well. It’s a problem to record only one shot on target in a game. It is either the supplies from the midfield weren’t good or the strikers were lacking how to make an attempt.

“In fact, it was sad but this tells us the crop of players we have in Ghana now,” said Bashiru Hayford.

The Black Galaxies played three games, losing two and winning one at the tournament, having missed the last three editions.

Ghana will have to wait for another two years to make an attempt at winning the African Nations Championship.
