The continent’s football organising body has announced various sanctions to the Senegal national team following the unprecedented brouhaha in the final of the just ended AFCON.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a series of disciplinary sanctions against Senegal following the chaotic scenes that marred the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in Morocco.
Senegal, who defeated host nation Morocco 1-0 to lift the AFCON 2025 trophy, have been slapped with a total fine of $750,000 after CAF found the conduct of the team, technical staff and supporters to be in breach of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
Chaos in the final
The highly-anticipated final, played in Morocco, descended into controversy after Senegal reportedly protested what they described as unfair officiating. The Teranga Lions staged a dramatic second-half boycott, refusing to return to the pitch and halting the match for nearly 30 minutes before eventually coming back out from the dressing room.
Despite the disruption, Senegal went on to complete a historic victory, scoring the decisive goal in extra time to silence the home crowd and clinch the title.
