I think the boys deserve some credit – Kotoko official defends players after WAC humiliation

An official of Asante Kotoko, name withheld for some reasons, has urged calm following the club’s heavy 5-1 loss to Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup, insisting that the players performed admirably given the circumstances.

Speaking to Ghanasportspage.com, the official highlighted the vast gap in experience and financial strength between the two teams but maintained that Kotoko showed commendable effort despite the result.

“This is only the second continental game for many of our players, and playing in front of such a huge crowd is never easy. I think they did well,” the source said.

He further emphasized the difference in quality and resources between the Ghanaian and Moroccan sides.

“They were better than us tactically. The standard will always not be the same because their lowest player salary is around $10,000, while ours is not even up to $1,000,” the source explained.

Despite the gulf in class, he believes the team’s fighting spirit deserves recognition.

“If we have a team that managed to go toe-to-toe with them and the difference came down to some minor mistakes, then we shouldn’t criticize them too much.”

Asante Kotoko will now shift focus to the Ghana Premier League, where they aim to bounce back from their continental disappointment.
