Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member, Oduro Sarfo, has defended the decision to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars despite public criticism.
In an interview with Guide Radio, Sarfo highlighted past experiences where public pressure led to premature dismissals, referencing former Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac, who took legal action against the GFA after his dismissal.
“Milovan took us to CAS, and we were ordered to pay him. We paid him, and it was left with $14, and he chased us for it. At the time, we believed there was progress in Cameroon, but the public demanded his sacking, and we bowed to the pressure.”
He further explained that the FA is committed to long-term planning and will not rush to appoint a new coach just months before crucial international competitions.
“We gave this young man [Otto Addo] a job for AFCON and the World Cup. Now, who should come in and continue? How many months are left? Should we bring in a new coach who doesn’t know the players? That’s what we keep doing, and it’s why we aren’t getting results,” Sarfo stated.
Otto Addo’s future as Ghana coach has been a subject of debate after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
However, the GFA remains supportive, backing him to lead the team in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.
