AFCON 2021 – Round 16: Nigeria brushed-off by Tunisia in a heartbreaking defeat

One of the top football nations in the ongoing AFCON tournament, Nigeria is out of the competition after a 1-0 disappointing defeat to North African giants Tunisia.

Nigeria is the only nation to win all their three group games during the group stages of the tournament.

The Super Eagles started their journey with 1-0 triumph over the Pharos of Egypt and topped Group D with 9points.

Coach Eguavon’s side today played out all they can to march on but Youssef Msakni’s 47th minute strike was hard to clear.

Nigeria were reduced to ten men after Alex Iwobi was sent off following a terrible tackle against one of the Tunisian players.

Nigeria’s Sadiq had an impressive performance tonight after coming in as a substitute. He nearly got the equalizer for the West African side but they needed an extra minutes to keep the name Nigeria in the tournament.

Tunisia at the last minute of the game introduced their delay tactics to maintain their lead to move forward.

Nigeria was eliminated in a surprise defeat to Tunisia.

Tunisia march on and can now look forward to a quarter-final clash against Burkina Faso on 29 January. Nigeria will now turn their thoughts to the Qatar 2022 WC qualifying games in March where the Super Eagles will face Ghana and with a new manager, Jose Peseiro on the bench.

Burkina Faso also belabored Gabon in a penalty shootout by 7-6 scoreline in the round 16 opener.
