“Our game against Algeria was a necessary friendly match” – Ex-Black Stars boss

Former Black Stars manager, CK Akonnor has said Ghana’s friendly game against Algeria ahead of the AFCON tournament which the Black Stars lost by 3 nill scoreline was necessary.

Akonnor insists if things are done right and putting that scoreline against the African champions aside the team can go and do well in the tournament.

In an interview this morning on Ghanaian-based Happy FM, the former Black Stars tactician revealed “For me, I think people might not be happy after our friendly against Algeria but it was a necessary friendly match. If you are going to play Morocco as your first match then at least you need to have an idea, (good idea) of the current situation of the Moroccan team and there wouldn’t be any other else than to play the African champions Algeria irrespective with the result. I think it is just a friendly match, by now management will know exactly what we want so we shouldn’t look at the result or the outcome but it was for me an unnecessary friendly match and of course going forward they would know what to do.

“We played Morocco when I was a coach some months ago but from that time to now a lot has changed so this friendly against Algeria we shouldn’t forget they are African champions and it means that they are a strong side. We are hopeful that come the day we will play Morocco, by that time we will do well but I can’t make a prediction of where this team can go as well as the finals. Now if you don’t do things right…we have to be realistic, don’t think about surprise. We can also go out and win but I think it was a necessary friendly match. I wish Black Stars best of luck.”

After helping Ghana to qualify for the 33rd edition of the African championship, CK Akonnor was sacked as the boss of the nation after losing to South Africa by a goal to nil in a World Cup qualifier game and after that the current boss, Milovan Rajevac was announced as the replacement for the Ghanaian coach.
