The continent’s ruling body made a landmark decision to grow the women’s game with the creation of a women’s club event.

The development follows the assurance of CAF supremo to strengthen the growth of women’s football after the launch of the four-year women’s football strategic plan last November in Egypt.

CAF officials insist, the creation of the women’s club event was hugely necessary amidst the concerns over the lack of professional women’s football leagues in Africa.

According to CAF Club Licensing Senior Manager, Muhammad Sidat, a club must have a female team before being allowed to participate in the 2022-2023 CAF Champions League and the subsequent editions.

So far, no Ghanaian club in the top flight have formed a women’s team.

This means, Ghanaian clubs would have to start forming female sides in order to be able to compete in Africa starting from 2022.

The maiden edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League will be held in Egypt later this year.

Ghana will be represented by Hasaacas Ladies who clinched the WAFU Zone B Champions League trophy after beating Nigerian champions, Rivers Angels.
